Make Your Own Slug Collars: Protect Plants Effectively

Which materials you need

The choice of material determines how long the collar will last. It must be weather-resistant and sturdy.

Galvanised sheet metal is the classic choice. It does not rust and lasts for many years. Cut it to size with tin snips. You should always fold over the edges to minimise the risk of injury.

Strong plastic is a good alternative. Use old plastic buckets, robust pond liner or PVC sheets. Make sure the material is thick enough to prevent the collar from buckling.

How to build a slug collar step by step

1. Cut the material to size

Measure the required circumference. The ring should be generous enough to give the plant room to grow. A diameter of 20-30 cm is ideal for young plants.

Cut a strip from your material. It should be at least 15 cm high. This leaves 10 cm of barrier above ground after inserting it into the soil.

With sheet metal or sturdy plastic, join the ends using small metal clips or a strong staple. Make sure the connection is seamless.

2. Position the collar correctly

Put the collar in place early. The ideal time is immediately after planting or sowing. This gives slugs no chance from the outset.

Push the ring about 3-5 cm into the soil. Firmly press down the soil around the outside. This underground wall blocks attempts to get underneath.

When using plastic or fleece, cut a small wedge from the top edge every 2-3 cm. This makes the edge even sharper and more unpleasant for slugs to overcome. These “spikes” increase its effectiveness.

Check regularly that the collar is still firmly in place. Soil can become loose after heavy rain or watering. Also make sure that no leaves or weeds grow over the edge and create a bridge.

Which plants particularly need protection

Not all plants are equally attractive to slugs. Use your resources where they are most needed.

Young lettuce plants are a particular favourite. Kohlrabi, spinach and Swiss chard are also high on the menu. Individual collars are especially worthwhile here.

Among ornamental plants, marigolds, sunflowers and dahlias are highly vulnerable. Protect young seedlings during the first critical weeks.
